'Real' 5-speed transmissions? What's the scoop? 200

I'm interested in putting a 'real' (none OD) 5-speed tranny in my '85 244T if I decide to keep it for a while. I've seen various topics on this subject, so what are all the options? Cost is a large factor, as well as if I can do it vs. having it done. And the overall quality of the different ones (for smoothness and quickness of shifting).
