Ignition switch – removal of tumbler (turns hard) 700 1990

The ignition switch is beginning to turn hard and sometimes does not automatically return from the Start position to the Run position. I believe I want to remove the tumbler assembly and lubricate or replace it.

I am parting out a 1988 740 and have used it as a test-bed for switch removal before removing parts and repairing the 1990 740.

I have removed the complete assembly that contains the steering wheel lock and the tumbler assembly. I have attempted to follow the FAQ

“The method for removing the lock cylinder is to remove top and bottom steering column covers, insert key, turn to position 1, press small button on top of column lock assembly (about 1" from end of lock cylinder) and pull out lock cylinder.”

There are two steel pin /buttons (about 1/8” diameter) on the side of the outside of the tumbler assembly: both are about 1” from the end, located at the 5 and 8 o’clock positions. These do not depress regardless of the position of the ignition key.

Suggestions & comments?

Thanks

Curt
