No thermostat at all! 700

My engine overheated for a few seconds some time ago after my indy mechanic cracked the second hand radiator I got him to install along with a general overhaul. I got a brand new radiator and also replaced my water pump and both coolant hoses. Afterwards, the engine overcooled and I could not get any heat at all inside the car. I had not worked on this car for a few months and today have been busy all day replacing all sorts of things. When I removed the top coolant hose to replace the thermostat, only the case was there, the spring and the rod (or whatever you call it) was gone, completely. I have never seen this before in my life.. what happend to the rest? Did it melt or did it fall of into the coolant canals. I have driven the car for a few hours after the replacement of waterpump/radiator and this was when I noticed the overcooling.
