The guts are in the radiator--flow is from engine to radiator at that point. 700

I can't say for certain what caused yours to fail, but I replaced the thermostat in my '87 240 today, after finding that it was very slow to heat up, and found out that my thermostat was broken! One side of the bracket holding the spring and valve had cracked, or maybe broken it's spot weld. Either way, it was just about to do what yours did, and perhaps the results would have been the same. I'm glad I fixed it when I did. It only took 10 minutes, including refilling the radiator and scraping out the corrosion inside the housing.
