Brake/Transmission Related Problem 700 1985

Hello Volvo Gurus,
I have a 1985 740 turbo that has recently developed some serious problems,
The brakes have become extremely hard,almost impossible to depress the pedal and the auto transmission will not shift properly, the engine revs up but the transmission does not seem to engage-will eventually engage. I am wondering if any of you have experieced anything like this-seems like two separate problems, but occured simutaenously. The brake problem sounds like a booster problem, but I am not sure the relationship between the brakes and the transmission unless there is a vacuum connection. The idle is rough also. I would appreciate any ideas that anyone has on these problems
