Flame trap 200

Fellow 240-owners; I went to the Volvo dealer to purchase a new timing belt today, and as I have seen a lot of postings on this famous flame trap on the brickboard, I decided to buy this part as well in order to lengthen the life of my healthy -88 245. The guy said that what I should do, was to take out this gizmo, trow it away and not replace it. He claimed that this has been common practice on these engines for quite a while for Volvo (OEM) mechanics, due to all the damage a blocked trap will cause to the seals. Besides, it doesn't seem that this "trap" has much function after all. Comments from the brickboard, please??
