Mostly true.
You could drive cross-country in your trusty 240 without your seatbelts, and the chances are that you'll make it to the other side just fine.
Would you do it? Probably not. Seatbelts are so easy to use that we'd be foolish to overlook using such a simple, easy, and beneficial technology.
Likewise with the flame trap.
The flame trap stops (quenches) a flame front, caused by a backfire, from reaching the crankcase. At the same time, the flame trap permits the crankcase vapors to be inhaled by the engine and burned. This is good for the environment.
The crankcase is full of explosive vapors. If hit by a flame, the resulting "POP" will likely blow out major engine seals and gaskets ($$$) or even ignite the engine on fire ($$$$$$).
Do you want to take that chance for a few bucks?
I don't.
The dealer guy was a moron.
