960 Oxygen Sensor Question 900

The wife's '94 960 with 140k miles has recently experienced some performance problems. The engine seems to "hiccup" under load either during hard acceleration or when trying to pass going up a hill on the interstate. Yesterday the "Check Engine Light" came on. The code shows 2-1-2, indicating a bad oxygen sensor.

I was about to make an appointment with a mechanic to look into the first problem when the "Check Engine Light" came on. My question is, do I save the money for the shop's diagnosis and just replace the O2 sensor and reasonably conclude that that should fix it, or is it worth the hassle and money to have the shop confirm the test of the O2 sensor before I shell out the bucks for a new one?

Also, how hard is it to replace? The FAQ seems to imply that it's not quite as simple as unplugging a wire and screwing in a new one. Any advice or suggestions?
