broken radiator sensor

on my 88 740GLE (B230F), the sensor mounted on the upper right corner, directly above the transmission cooler lines, of the radiator is heavily corroded and one of the leads is broken in the sensor. Volvo P/N 12749628. It has a plastic retaining cap that's also cracked in half. What does this sensor do? Where can I get a replacement for cheap? Volvo dealer wants $63 for the sensor and $4 for plastic retaining cap.
