HELP!! Overdrive turning on and off!! 1989

I have a 89' 240DL with 141000 miles on it. The overdrive keeps turning on and off all by itself. The transmission fluid needs to be changed so I am going to do that but I was wondering what could be wrong. Some have said that the solenoid is going bad or something. Is this true? How do I check it and/or fix it? Is there a book that shows me? Please Help. Thanks
