Timing Belts for 1992 960s 900

I just purchased a used 1992 960. It is recommended that the timing belt be changed every 30,000 miles. The previous owner told me that later models 93-95) of the 960 are recommended to go a lot longer between changes with basically the same engine and belt. What gives here? Why are 92 owners required to do more than others with the same basic car?
