CHANGING PUMPKIN COVER AND SENDING UNIT????????????????? AM LOST 700

GOOD DAY ALL
My question , if I remove the rear axle cover plate ( the Pumpkin cover) and replaced it with one with a good sending unit , would there be any unforseen problems and if so what to look for?
My problem sending unit is gone somebody( mechanic) told me the sending unit is a bitch to remve then you have to shim it up and I also would probably will have to replace gear or two in the pumpkin??????
I am lost but will change please advise .
