O/D not working 700

Another question if I may. On a 1990 740 wagon, non-turbo, recently my overdrive arrow on the dash is coming on, and of course when that happens, the O/D is not working. We have never used the button on the shifter to turn this feature off. I guess it could be the relay or the solenoid, or a bad connection. Maybe you drive 2, 5, or 10 minutes, the light goes out, the tranny shifts into O/D and averything is fine. Any suggestions on troubleshooting this?
