Since the light is coming on, I think you have problems with the overdrive relay. If Al was correct about the wire under the car being chafed, the light would not be a symptom. If it isn't the relay it will be the wires or switch. Go to the 700/900 FAQ and locate the relay. Then remove the relay and re-solder the solder joints which are almost certainly bad in a relay that old.
