drivability issues 700 1990

OK here it goes. I'm new to this forum because I just got a new to me Volvo. In less than 3 wks I've truely grown to love it and it's the best vehicular decision I've even made.
Some facts and history. 1990 740 wagon turbo intercooled auto 262k kilometers (165k miles) I paid C$4,500 (about US$ ten bucks - just kidding). Trustworthy po but no history with the car. Cheep because the po had emmisions problems. PO's mechanice said it needed AMM and a fuel ECU. The check engine light was on when I bought the car. Thanks to al the info here I cleaned the throttle body, adjusted the throttle control valve, cleaned the crankcase vent etc, IAC, and but dielectric grease on the proper harnesses. O2 sensor checks OK. Idle is now perfect, and the check engine light is off. I think the PO's mechanic was lazy. So far so good. Then out of the blue it starts losing power under load, not stalling but coughing, sputtering and unable to maintain forward momentum. It happened passing up a slight grade, went away, then a steeper grade, went away, once more with less impact and has now gone away again. On all ocations the engine was warm and not in boost. where to start? Fuel pump, ignition, (has new plugs), fuel filter? Any advise is appreciated.
