Speedo cable? 200 1983

This is probably a very simple question to answer, but before I go through the trouble of replacing my speedometer cable I want to make sure:

I've got a squeaking noise on my 1983 volvo 240 DL wagon (AT/OD) coming from behind the dash that gets louder and faster as I accelerate - so much so that my family is now calling the car our "squeaky banana". I'm pretty sure that this is a symptom of a speedometer cable that needs replacing, but I wanted to make sure. Can I grease it to eliminate the sound, or should I just bite the bullet and change the cable.

Any help would be appreciated.
