Towing with a 240 200 1987

Soon I am going to be driving my 1987 244dl, 1,600 miles from Texas to Philadelphia with a small U-haul trailer in back. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for the drive. The brick has wagon struts in the rear, is a 5-speed, and runs on 10W30 synthetic.
Should I put 15W40 for the trip? Never go into fifth gear? Only drive 50 mph? Only drive 200 miles a day? Never use the A/C? Should I load the car or trailer in any special way (i.e. all the weight in the trailer)?
Any advice to save wear on the car would be greatly appreciated,
thanks in advance.
