Better mileage - agitated wife is asking how to get - HELP !!

I finally got my better half in a 940T (94 w/ 145K).
Car is in good shape - may need a bit more of a tuneup - just replaced the plugs.

What else might I tell her so she can get better mileage? She is now getting 16.5 in city driving.

Maybe some things I can do mechanical - maybe some hints on driving habits??She does have a tendency to push too hard on the gas pedal, I think. I was also wondering if allowing it to warm up better in the AM might help ?? She gets in it, and backs up a rather steep hill with little warmup.

I am also wondering about timing ?? My mechanic says that it is never needed on these, but I see many discussions about timing.

Any thoughts? I don't want to have to put her in a rice rocket.
