BLEEDING BRAKES BUT NOT EMPYING RESERVOIR 200

I just bought a 1989 240D station wagon with 170k miles on it for my grandson and we are fixing some things. the brake failure warning light was on so I bled the Brakes the old fashioned way (he pumps and holds, and I crack the valve. We did it in the prescribed sequence described in the manual but the level in the reservoir never went down even though I cracked each of the eight bleed vales at least three times. WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT?
By the way, after I bled the brakes, the light still comes on. I thought that the switch which drives this light measures any pressure differetnial between the primary and secondary systems. Is there some way to reset the switch?
