A/C Question 900

a few years back I had the AC system in my 91 GLE converted to the new Freon 134 system. The system is low and I've picked up a can to recharge it. According to the instructions on the can, you can either hold it upright, or upside down, for either vapor, or liquid. I don't have a clue which I need, vapor or liquid. Any suggestions?
