Sunroof Motor/Replace 900

The sunroof motor gave up on my '93 945T. It was stuck in the tilt-up position. I removed it and ordered a new one. I've continued to drive the car with the motor removed and the roof tilted up. And over the last few days, the roof has settled to nearly closed. How do I move the mechanism without damaging anything so that I can install the new motor? And what position should the roof be in for the install?
