Still Idle Problem 700 1990

Hi there folks,

I've pored over the FAQ and even reviewed the results of an exhaustive search, but frankly, I'm overwhelmed at the number of possible reasons... so here goes, in an effort to whittle 'em down:

Symptoms: on cold start, idle fine. When put into gear, engine wants to die. When A/C energized, wants to die. All this ONLY on a cold start.

Recent work: found rather huge hole in AMM-Turbo S-hose, replaced with aftermarket part (disappointed in quality, should have bought genuine Volvo). Cleaned TB (was fine, really). Removed and inspected IAC, not dirty, replaced. Though, the (horrible) Haynes procedure for testing the resistance on the IAC didn't work for me: Haynes says there's three terminals, my IAC only had two. Also, the "valve" was partly open even at rest - is it supposed to be like this, or is it faulty?

Also, since replacing the AMM-Turbo hose, my boostmeter doesn't go up half as much as it did, and acceleration seems a bit sluggish, with a moment's hesitation after pushing the pedal. Was the holey hose (!) giving the turbo more air than it should have been, and I'd been enjoying too much boost, or ... ? I don't pretend to fully understand the mechanics.

Wishing and thanking,

Justin Smith
