90' 740 automatic shifter "play"

the stick on my automatic transmission is acting weird. i suddenly have more "play" when it's in gear. it would not start the other day until i wiggled with the shifter a bit, then it started right up. any suggestions on where to start? is there an adjustment in the tunnel or from within the inside i can adjust to tighten it up? the tranny seems to shift fine in all gears.
