90' 740 automatic shifter

Sounds like your little rubber bushing under the car has broken and possibly gone away. I made one out of some fuel line for one of my cars that did this. It worked pretty well but I replaced it with a real one from a pick a part car. Put the car up on jack stands and look at the linkage. It should be obvious where the bushing goes.
