Hello Again,
After my initial post and very informative responses, I have identified the cause of shudder when accelerating in my wagon - the center bearing rubber boot is "drooping" about 1/2 inch from the top, allowing significant movement of the bearing and driveshaft.
Since I do not know when the u-joints were last replaced and the car has 238,000 miles, I will "go for the gusto" and replace all three u-joints when I pull the driveshaft. I will mark the flanges so that the driveshaft is replaced in phase.
I've ordered u-joints, center bearing kit and replacement flange bolts from ipd. I was a little hesitant to order the Scan Tech brand from Groton, so I did pay alot more at ipd. I'll be doing this work next weekend.
My questions:
1. Regarding driveshaft removal - it looks like the easiest way is to raise the rear end, place jackstands at the jacking points, lower and put the tranny in Neutral so that I will be able to rotate the driveshaft and be able to get at the flange bolts. Will this work? and does anyone have other methods to suggest?
2. After removing the flange bolts, it appears that the easiest way to remove the driveshaft is to lower the back flange below the differential and feed the front portion through the center mount and back.
Sorry for the length of this post, but I've never done this before and want to get it right. Any tips/suggestions are much appreciated.
