r12 conversion to r134a 200 1985

Sounds great to do this conversion to the cheaper r134a, since my a/c is unfortunately getting cold instead of ice-cold temp. Someone was going to do this for my car and said that all you do is fill it up, w/out any additional parts or replacements. (?) Now, is it neccessary to have all of these new o-rings fittings and I believe a new drier? If so, why do I need these, instead of just replacing the r12 freon w/ r134a? It's a relative going to do this for me... makes me nervous! Don't know if to trust em or not :-) Is this insane? Thx in advance!
