How can I inexpensively reduce turbo lag? 200

Hi,
I have a 1985 245ti with too much turbo lag. It might be normal for the car, but I'm getting sick of it. I think it is also a safety issue becuase in some situations you need to go quickly like clearing out of an intersection. I want to know if there are things I can tune, clean, or replace to improve the turbo response. I have also heard of boost controllers helping reduce turbo lag. How effective and safe are these and where could I get one cheap. thanks

Charles 1985 245ti 135K
