Getting this new purchase back on the road by Monday had gone out with the tide. As Volvo Dad put it, the PO had a utilized the practice of "deferred maintenance." Does anyone want to see a photo of original Volvo plugs with 148,100 miles on them? .080 gap in these old plugs and the car still had plenty of giddy-up and go.
I am looking for a source for a crank timing gear. Does anyone have a part no? Local dealers are closed. The only place that I could find open on a Saturday was All OEM Volvo Parts. They only had the gear for the square teeth, for a very reasonable $40, rather than the rounded. I will have to wait to Monday and I would rather use discount mail order establishment. I think this will be a "harder to find" discounted part. I will probably try Fisher Auto and Brian Leppin for used parts first, then go to Borton Volvo unless someone has some other ideas.
Everything was going well with the timing belt and front seals replacement (and everything else replacement). I even remembered to loosen the cam and Aux gear before the T-Belt removal. I had to struggle with the harmonic balancer removal. I found that the harmonic balancer was installed so that it did not mate with the key on the timing gear. Under close inspection the crank timing gear appears to have developed a crack at the stress point, a valley in the gear, near the key, where it was bearing against the harmonic balancer.
The harmonic balancer also had a small dent in the HB shaft hole that made it difficult to remove from the crank shaft. I lightly whacked off the, ever so slight, out of round dent in the harmonic balancer and cleaned the inside with some 600 grit. It goes onto the crank shaft with just a minor struggle.
Hey Kuba, what ever happened to your loose HB problem?
