Replacing the windshield 200 1985

I have a Volvo 244 DL from 1985.
A crack has been developing across my windshield for a couple months now, so it will be neccessary to replace the windshiled soon.
I remember hearing that it is better to ask for a windshield from a newer Volvo 240 as a replacement. What year range should I request?
How much should I expect to pay?
Any other tips?
