Fuel Filter Replacement- tight nuts & bolts 200

I have an 81 242 with the large barrel looking fuel filter mounted under the hood at the top of the driver's side fire wall. The kind with the 90 degree bend in the bolt connecting the tank side line to the filter (what a pain)

I swapped out the filter yesterday and had A LOT of trouble getting the old one out. I was careful not to over tighten the bolts when I put the new one in, but of course, when I started the car (or tried to) gas went squirting everywhere.

The washers are not new- but they look ok. How tight do you usually get the connections to the filter? I'm worried about stripping everything next time I change the filter.
