exhaust temp variances 140-160 1970


Hi guys.

It's been hot where I live and I've found that having a car with
AC and another with AC makes it a lot easier to chose which I'm going
to drive... (the other's a VW golf TDI)

I drove the old 164 around yesterday and when I was at the autoparts
store to buy some screws to hold my VWs license plate on, they were
showing off one of those spiffy new thermometers which tells you the
temperature without touching the damned thing.

I borrowed it and pointed it around various parts of my car's
motor and things were mostly satisfactory except that the exhaust temps
were wildly different across the exhuast ports. The hottest is almost
100 degrees higher than the lowest, and 4 of them were pretty close to
each other. The hottest one was the #5 and the coldest was the #3, the
rest were about in between them.

The car is a 1970 164 with dual strombergs; the head was recently off
and I haven't re checked the compression since bolting the head on;
perhaps I should retorque the head. Would these temperature differences
be a result of differing compressions?
