wagon tailgate stuck shut 700 1989

The tailgate lock has been broken for awhile in this 1989 740 wagon. To be more specific, the power locks operated the tailgate lock just fine, but the key was useless. The lock "floated" back and forth a bit in it's hole. Now the power locks no longer open the tailgate lock. Unfortunately, it failed while locked, and I can't figure out how to take apart the tailgate while it is closed. Any ideas? Thanks
