blue/white smoke, leaking oil cap, and a bad cat 700

Took my car to my mechanic today to get my rattling sound diagnosed. He told me it was the cat and that I might as well wait till the muffler is bad(few months down the road he says) and get the whole thing replaced so there will only be one labor fee. When they were revving the engine to listen for sounds my car started blowing blue smoke out the exhaust. When I pulled in the driveway after about 30 secounds of idlling it started to puff smoke. The car doesn't seem to puff smoke when its moving though. Other thing is that this is the first time my car has had semi-synth oil in it. Could the smoke be the mobil 1 oil cleaning up the engine and burning the crud up?

Ever since I have had the car oil has been coming out onto the valve cover from the oil cap. Already changed the oil cap seal and it helped but it is still coming out. Heard stuff about cleaning the flame trap to stop this from happening.. can anyone tell me or direct me a link in the FAQ that outlines this procedure??
