replacing a/c clutch 200

I am looking at buying a 1988 240 GL with 220,000 miles that needs a new a/c clutch. Is that a simple repair, or something left to the professionals? How much should I expect to pay a repair shop to fix this problem? (the car is very clean and he is asking $1,500 - does that sound about right?)
