r12 to 134 different approach

I have read many accounts about changing from r12 to 134 coolant. They all say drain the compressor, replace drier, etc. I have converted 3 cars with the walmart conversion and never did any of that. There was no r12 left and I figured I had not much to loose. I have a 86 Ford PU which has been working perfectly since it was converted4 or 5 years ago. I have a 80 Buick that has been working fine for about 4 years and a 87 740 Wagon that I converted about 4 years ago also - no problem. My question is this: Am I the only person who has done this and gotten away with it or is everyone else just being quiet?
