Brake Failure Indicator 200 1990

My 1990 240 DL's BRAKE FAILURE indicator light has just come on, but the brakes appear to be working correctly. The car did not come with an owner's manual, so I can't check it. I tried adding brake fluid to the system, but the light still won't come off. What is the problem, and how can I fix it?
