heat shrink tubing question 200 1981

I am attempting to repair damaged insulation on the turn signal harness. If you split heat shrink tubing to cover the damaged insulation, will it still shrink when heated, and adhere to the wire/insulation? If not, what is the best remaining alternative repair? I really don't want to go and search out/pay for yet another turn signal housing.
