oil leak 200 1980

My daughter and son-in-law have a 1980 244 with 160M+ miles. They acquired it used, and it has not been pampered. It suddenly developed a significant oil leak at the front of the engine. It appears to be coming from between the head and block. It's on the passenger side of the engine, right at the front and causes quite a bit of smoke. Is this a head gasket problem? O-ring? Thanks in advance for the help.
