Paint care advice 700 1991

I have two 91 bricks, 740 & 940 wagons. Both were bought used & neither of the previous owners kept the paint up. I've used wax & rubbing compound (by Hand)& it really doesn't make much of a difference over just washing.
What difference will it make from a corrosion perspective if I don't wax? I live in Eastern Canada (road salt capital of the world. One brick is parked for the winter & the other is driven year round.
Someone told me they rubbed the painted surfaces w/ interior type lamp oil (kerosene)for the winter monthes. He has done this from new & his stuff still looks good. I'm not starting from the same point. Any comments?
