vacuum leak? 700 1989

Interesting occurance last night on my 89 740 GL. Stopped for groceries and started back up. Started fine then the idle dropped sharply and the check engine light came on briefly. As I was driving home I noticed that I had no air coming out of the dash vents. Got home and played with the controls a bit and found that all the air was coming out the defroster vents. It was dark so I decided to look for what I thought was going to be an obvious vacuum leak this morning. Went out, raised the hood and checked all the hoses and found no leaks and now the hvac controls works and air shifts from dash to floor to defrost. Not fooling myself into thinking the problems magically fixed itself over night. Any ideas on what to look for?
