Best way to access the OD solenoid, Weird 'overheating' problem, etc.? 200 1986

Howdy--

O V E R D I V E :

I have an intermittently-working OD. Since it sometimes works when I pound my fist in the general area of the glove box, I suspect a faulty solenoid, or at least a poorly-connected one. Where exactly IS the thing and what do I need to do to gain access to it?

" O V E R H E A T I N G " :

This one's weird (or is it strange?). When I turn on the headlights (or just the running lights) the temperature gauge steadily creeps up to the red zone (or is it orange?). When the lights are turned off, it steadily falls back down to where it should be; about a third (or is it a quarter?) of the way up. I don't think the car is actually overheating, but what's a good way to tell (without getting an expensive Star Trek laser temperature gun)? Anyone ever had this problem?

Thanks!

Ben (rampant abuser of parentheses)
