Engine turns without starting; electrical problem (?) 200 1983

Warning 1: I probably have no idea what I am talking about.
Note: This being my first post, I thought I should introduce myself.

Anyway. I'd been looking about the BrickBoard for some time trying to find a solution to an idle problem I've been having. Specifically, the idle adjust does nothing. As a part of trying to determine the problem, I grounded a blue-white wire hoping to bypass the air control valve. (I'm out of my league here, by the way.) It is one of two in an unused blue connector; the other is a faded red wire. This is the smaller of two red wires going into the wiring harness[?] the other goes to the fuse, then the battery.

Unfortunately, I think that, in my haste, I made a very grave error. I heard a slight pop/click/snap, as in a fuse breaking, when I touched the wire to ground. Touching it again had no further effect. After doing this, the car no longer starts. The engine turns, but does not ... catch? ignite? ... start.

Just guessing, I'm betting that I fried some circuit involved in getting fuel (or maybe spark?) to the engine. I'm very new at this DIY Volvo thing, though, and could easily be wrong. Any ideas or advice?
