85 240Ti m46 to 142GL m41 driveshaft interchability 140-160

I have access (about an hour away) to a 1985 244turbo/intercooled m46 car. On pulling the rear sway bar I noted a much larger and double layered/stepped driveshaft than my rather puny factory one (1.75"). When I came home, I verified that the part number for the center bearing and its rubber carrier is the same- does anyone know if the rear half or both halves are interchangeble, and the newer shaft could be fit to my car? I was wondering if at least the rear could be used via the splines being the same.
I'm hoping for greater strength (I have a seriously torquey drivetrain swap pending) and reduced vibation.
Yeah, I know I'm being lazy, but rather than spend (waste) part of a day trying, I thought I'd ask.

Ian
