Hi Guys,
No, not some overpriced package holiday, but a description of what my 940 se Turbo is doing to my bank balance!
I've had this car for a little over a year and must admit, didn't pay a fortune for it.
The previous owner had looked after it and it was in very good all round condition!
He warned me that his garage had been unable to trace a pulsating noise coming from somewhere in the drive train, more noticable on a left handed bend, but he was apparently told that it "couldn't be much, as the layout is so agricultural"!
I had the car fully serviced, which didn't turn up any nasties, other than all four brake disc's needed replacing. I asked that particular garage to check to see if they could find where the noise was coming from. They recomended that I had the carrier barring replaced as it seem very slack!
They did the job and although it was a little stiffer, made no difference to the noise.
The garage then started pointing the finger of doubt at several other possibilties, but I was getting the impression that they didn't want to pursue it any further!
The radio normally drowns the noise, so I haven't worried about getting it sorted.
Last month was a rather expensive month as far as the brick was concerned.
Firstly, the turbo air intake hose expired, quickly followed by the radiator bottom hose. The MOT was next, which it failed, on cracking flexible brake hoses, all were replaced.
Insurance was next, which has sky rocketed in the last year. The cheapest I could find was nearly 600 pounds!
When I enquired about this, all I got was a very unsympathetic "well you do live in London and it is a turbo, sir"!
Road tax was next, followed with another service.
I reported that I'd recently been experiencing a vibration when braking, the garage (different one!) reported that one of the rear brake disc's had warped, with the first signs of a crack appearing!
They said it could be the rusult of a seizing caliper!
Also, the pulsating noise is getting a little louder, confirmed by the fact that I have to have the radio on a higher volume setting!
I'm now at a cross roads, do I bite the bullet and get it all put right (this garage wants to strip the rear axel and suspension down to trace the noise!)
Or, do I take up the offer of a near mint Toyota Camry which drives like new and is being offered at a very reasonable price!
Having had a Camry before, I must say I'm very tempted by the smoothness and reliabilty.
Don't get me wrong, the experience of owning the 940, apart from the reliabilty issue's has been a good one! (one of the few cars I've owned where I've felt perfectly safe and where oncoming idiots tend not to take the p*ss!)
I feel that a little input from the group may tempt me from straying to 'the dark side'!
Bodywork and engine / geabox are still in excellent condition for the year and 120,000 miles!
So what do you think guys, stick with it, or cut my losses?
Cheers,
Brian.
