overdrive solenoid 200 1984

My overdrive has been functioning intermittantly for quite some time now. I have checked wiring and relay and have had my car looked at by my mechanic. He told me that I need a new OD Solenoid. Is this something that a lay person with some automotive repair skills and most basic tools should attempt? I would rather find the part cheap on line and do the work myself than pay the $350 my mechanic is asking. Any thoughts?
