Shifter tightness - or lack there of 1800

I have noticed that the shifter in the 1966 1800S is a bit sloppy. It's not real bad and doesn't pop out of gear or anything, but there have been times I have missed a downshift because I couldn't easily locate 2nd gear. How precise are the 1800 shifters supose to be, and how does one go about tightening them up? I have heard that replacement of the nylon cup under the shift will help somewhat, but is that true? What’s involved?

Thanks in advance

Oliver
