Battery Question -- Lots of Corrosion , just cleaned terminals ?!? 200 1986

What could cause the Negative terminal to load with whitish/blue corrosion just 2 days after being cleaned? No problem with the Positive at all. The battery is about 3 years old, and is suspected of not holding a charge. Could this be a related factor in the corrosion?
