While lying under my recently acquired 240 Wagon installing shocks, I noticed that the"shelf" between the body and the rear bumper was badly rusted. Also badly rusted were the fastening bolts for the bumper shock absorber flanges. It appears that the "shelf" is part of the body, and is a seam between the floor and cab. My plan is to remove the bumper, cut out all the rust (Sawzall), then rust treat, fiberglass, then paint. Q: Is this joint critical in terms of body torque where fiberglass won't work? I normally would weld in the patch, but the gas tank is there, and I's rather not get into dropping it out as well. Also, will I be able to get the bumper off, or will the shock absorbers be rusted into their sockets? I don't normally see rust here in Texas, but this was a West Virginia car. This area escaped my searching eyes and magnet when I checked it out!
