fitting mechanical spedometer on 'digital' tranny 200

The early 240's (pre '85 or so) all have a mechanical spedometer, driven by the spedometer cable from the transmission (either manual or auto). I was wondering if there is a way to use a later type transmission (without the spedometer fitting on the tranny) in an early (mechanical spedo) 240. That way it increases the numbers of trannys I can use, and also the price...

Is there a way to put a little 'something' on the driveshaft, so I can still use the mechanical spedometer.
