Shifter Linkage? 700

Recently, I can not start my car. It will not crank and it is like I left the car in Drive position (AW70 off 1989 740GL) even though the shifter is in park. I noticed that the transmission indicator when placed in park does not reach the 'P' window and is obscured by the black surounding plastic. If I wiggle the shifter then the car can start as normal. Is my problem with the linkage on the shifter or do I have larger trannie problems? And what is the best method for fixing this problem.
